  • During an appearance on The View, Whoopi Goldberg gifted Hugh Grant a bottle of moisturizer.

  • Grant had previously made a joke about the condition of his skin on the Oscars telecast.

  • Grant, who wrote the joke himself, initially worried it would be poorly received.

Hugh Grant caused a stir at last weekend's Academy Awards (to say nothing of his red carpet appearance) when he cracked a bawdy joke about, well, cracked skin. And during a recent appearance on The View, Whoopi Goldberg one-upped Grant's Oscars joke with a gag of her own.

Grant appeared on the 95th Academy Awards in a reunion with Andie MacDowell, his co-star from Four Weddings and a Funeral (itself a Best Picture nominee in its day). Taking the stage to present Best Production Design, Grant made this quip:

"We're actually here to do two things. The first is to raise awareness about the vital importance of using a good moisturizer. Andie here has been wearing one every day for the last 29 years. I've never used one in my life."

Grant gestured to MacDowell and said, "Still stunning." He then pointed to himself and said, "Basically, a scrotum." As far as we can tell, this was likely the first time the word "scrotum" was used on stage at the Academy Awards. Though, who knows? Perhaps Lionel Barrymore fired off a real wild speech after he won Best Actor in 1931 for A Free Soul. We just don't have any record of it.

As The Wrap notes, during an appearance on The View, Whoopi Goldberg, no stranger to cracking jokes on the Oscar stage (she hosted the ceremony four times), presented Grant with an appropriate gift in response to his joke: a bottle of moisturizer. "Just in case!" Goldberg joked. "You can never have too much moisturizer."

“I was nervous—I wrote that joke, and I was still extremely nervous about it. I think I got away with it,” Grant later said of the line. “Sigourney Weaver said to me afterwards, ‘You don’t look like a scrotum.’ And she liked the joke. That relaxed me. But I was very nervous about it.”

And really, who wouldn't get a little extra pep in their step if Sigourney Weaver told them they didn't actually resemble genitals?
