Who is Emma Mackey? Margot Robbie 'lookalike' lands Burberry campaign after leading Barbie and Sex Education roles
The 27-year-old actor is on track to become as known as fellow Brits Florence Pugh and Emma Watson.
Emma Mackey is on the up.
The 27-year-old French-British actor, who rose to fame starring in Netflix’s Sex Education, is currently gracing the silver screen as a leading Barbie character. Google searches for Mackey’s name jumped by 95% as her role as Physicist Barbie in the Greta Gerwig-directed film became known.
She's also today been named the face of Burberry’s first-ever refillable fragrance, Burberry Goddess.
The lavender and vanilla infused fragrance doesn't come cheap: Available from Selfridges, it costs £130 for the 150ml refill.
Other notable roles include playing the lead in 2022 period drama Emily and a part in Kenneth Branagh's Poirot reprise, Death on the Nile.
Who is Emma Mackey?
Born in 1996 in Le Mans, France to a French father and an English mother, Emma Mackey moved to England when she went to study English language and literature at the University of Leeds.
Sex Education was her first role, where she played the smart 'bad girl' Maeve Wiley for three seasons. She'll reprise her role in the fourth and final season.
Mackey was nominated for a British Academy Television Award in 2021, and subsequently won the Rising Star Award at the 2023 film BAFTAs after taking the lead role in the 2022 film Emily, based on the life of Emily Bronte.
She has also had roles in Death on the Nile, Eiffel and The Winter Lake and will star alongside Fiona Shaw in the upcoming film, Hot Milk.
Unlike other stars her age, she’s not on social media having deleted her public Instagram in 2021. "I haven’t had any social media for six months, which has done wonders for me; I highly recommend it," she told Stylist earlier this year.
Physical similarities to Margot Robbie
Mackey partly scored her role in Barbie due to her physical similarities to the film's female lead, Margot Robbie. Internet users have shared side-by-side photos of the pair resembling one another for some time now and Robbie, along with director Gerwig, decided to capitalise on the resemble by making a joke about it in the film.
However, once the pair were in full hair and make-up on set, Robbie admitted the joke no longer worked and so it was removed from the film.

Emma Mackey's best red carpet fashion moments
As well as making waves in Hollywood, Mackey has been praised for her chic red carpet style.
The slinky, Saint Laurent dress she wore to the Barbie European premiere earlier this month was hailed 'sensational' by the Daily Mail.
