White House supports countries sending fighter jets to Ukraine

He said the United States would support countries deciding to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine.

Kirby noted that the United States is coordinating with allies within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (also known as “Ramstein format” meetings) regarding the transfer of weapons to Ukraine.

Commenting on Poland’s intentions to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, he said countries have the sovereign right to make these decisions.

Polish President Andrzej Duda told CNN on March 8 that his country was ready to hand over its entire Soviet-era MiG-29 aircraft fleet to Ukraine.

Then Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad said on March 9 that Poland had agreed to a joint transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Later, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said that the process of supplying fighter jets to Ukraine has begun. At the same time, he emphasized that Kyiv also needs more modern aircraft, such as F-16 fighter jets.

Ihnat also mentioned that the Polish and Slovak MiG-29s could be partiallyused to provide spare parts for the country’s currently operating aircraft.
