From the gripping storyline to the impressive performances, Mare of Easttown ticked all our binge-worthy TV boxes. So, when the series wrapped up after seven dramatic episodes, we were already pretty excited for the show to return for a second season. Unfortunately it seems we might be waiting a while, or forever.

In a recent interview with TVLine, show creator Brad Ingelsby confessed he's not sure a second season would live up to the first. "If we can crack a story that is as great [as season one] and that would do justice to the characters and carry on the story in a way that was organic and yet surprising, I would love to do it,” he said, “I just don’t know what the story is. That’s the issue right now."

Ingelsby added he's waiting for a "lightbulb moment", but admitted "it may never happen. That’s the reality."

Kate Winslet, who starred as detective Mare, already revealed she'd be keen for a second season, telling TVLine she would "absolutely love to play Mare again."

But speaking of her character, Ingelsby explained "We gave Mare such a personal arc where she had to confront this loss in her life, and we would have to construct another emotional arc that was able to compete with [that]."

The creator concluded by saying he's hesitant to do a second season just for the sake of it. "I’m also acutely aware of the dangers of doing a Season 2 just because you have the [opportunity] to do it," he said, "I would only want to do it if we were convinced we had something great."

While it looks like the possibility of a second season of the show is uncertain, we're not losing all hope just yet. Although the show was billed by HBO as a limited series, so was Big Little Lies, which was brought back for a second season – starring Meryl Streep no less.

Here's hoping then!
