In the event that you're *still* waiting to see what the ladies of Monterey are up to after 84 long years ('kay, it's only been four, but still!), we're happy to announce that we've recently gotten some pretty major Big Little Lies season 3 updates c/o our fave book club queen Reese Witherspoon. But before we get into the details of what she dished during the 2024 Golden Globes (in short: she's "working on" it!!!), let's get into everything else we know about the latest installment of the hit show. Starting with the fact that...

A third season was speculated to not even happen for a while

Alright, so let’s get this out of the way right now. There were originally tons of whispers after season 2 dropped that there would not be another installment thanks to a July 2019 TVLine interview (via the Daily Mail) with the president of HBO, Casey Bloys. The exec dished to the outlet that it was unlikely they’d make more episodes because the level of talent on the show is so high that it’d be hard to get everyone back at the same time due to crazy schedules.

“I love this group of people—I would do anything with them. The reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. I just think it’s not realistic,” he mused at the time.

Per the convo, Reese and her Big Little Lies costar Nicole Kidman, in particular, were reportedly so busy that it was a miracle they were even able to make a season 2: “Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’—then sure. But I just don't think it's realistic.”

But Nicole *has* said she's down 👀

Like, even way back in an October 2019 Elle interview, the actor dished, “Everyone says, ‘Are you going to do a season 3?’ We’re like, ‘Just give us a sec.’ We’d love to [do another season] because we love being together, and it’s lovely spending time with your friends and with such good material.”

Aaaaaand so has Reese...

During a July 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, both Nicole and Reese talked about a potential season 3 and said they wanted to keep some of their thoughts on season 2 to themselves in case they do end up doing it.

“If there are conversations still to be had, I think that’s really what determines if we can tell a season 3. Is it as good as season 1 and 2? Does the audience still have questions? Do we have answers?” Reese said at the time before Nicole added that it’s kind of up to everyone who’s involved. “It’s a collaboration. We work as a group. We are incredibly tight; we talk to each other and we are on each other’s side. So we will decide as a group.”

But now we officially have an answer!

In November 2023, Nicole seemingly confirmed the return of the limited series while taking part in a fan event that was shared by DeuxMoi (via People).

“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children, and I was thinking I was going to retire, and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show. And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success,” the actor began before adding, “And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

Obviously, the People of the Internet™️ collectively freaked, and this was the general vibe:

Then, during the Golden Globes on January 7, 2024, when asked by Variety to "confirm" whether a third season was in the works, Reese herself revealed she is currently “hard at work” on the project and that “Nic and I have been working on it a lot,” leaving legit every single person ever in a state of shock.

At the premiere of her drama series Expats on January 21, Nicole also gave some insight into the progress of season 3. "We are always cooking things up!" she said of herself and the producers during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "We've got a timeline for it now."

She added that she and Reese were "letting things find their way," and that she feels that "the time is now" to bring season 3 to life.

"We are obviously all devastated at the loss of Jean-Marc Vallée," she also explained, referring to the filmmaker and director who helmed the original series before his death in December 2021. "That made us go, 'Can we move forward?' But Reese and I, and all of the other women, have decided, yes we can."

Now, all of this ^^^ obvi leaves us with the question of...

When will Big Little Lies season 3 come out?

*Le sigh* Sadly, the premiere date of season 3 is still up in the air.

However!!! Make sure to check back here for any and all updates once we find out.

Who will star in Big Little Lies season 3?

Given how much Reese and Nicole have shared the similar sentiment that they'd only commit to season 3 if it was agreed upon by most of the original cast, it's safe to assume that most of the actors will go on to reprise their *chef's kiss* roles, including Nicole and Reese, Meryl Streep, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, and James Tupper.

So we’re just supposed to go on living our lives as if having no more BLL for the time being is okay?

Sadly, yes. 😭😭😭

Obvi, we'll update this post if and when HBO gets wise enough to give us an official Big Little Lies season 3 release date. But in the meantime...
