Were you offended? Michelle Wolf’s WHCD jokes divide viewers

“This was a roast, meaning poking fun at others.” “She is done, like Kathy Griffin.” Comedian and “Daily Show” correspondent Michelle Wolf caused an uproar after delivering what some called offensive jabs at White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Newsroom readers are weighing in. As host of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Wolf took aim at all of Washington, including Sanders. There were many zingers, many pointed at the absent POTUS. But it was this one aimed at Sanders that got the most attention, and outrage: "I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful. But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it; maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.” While some — like fellow comics Jimmy Kimmel, Rosie O’Donnell, and Judd Apatow — praised Wolf for her punchlines, others felt she crossed a line in criticizing Sanders’s looks. Newsroom comments showed the divide. “What Wolf did is what comedians do,” one reader wrote. Another fired off: “She simply wasn’t funny.” Wolf took to Twitter to defend her material: “Why are you guys making this about Sarah’s looks? I said she burns facts and uses the ash to create a *perfect* smoky eye. I complimented her eye makeup and her ingenuity of materials.” What do you think? Join the conversation in Newsroom.
