We’re just not ready to let go of the Sex and the City universe, it seems.

HBO announced Tuesday that the highly successful (and divisive) SATC revival, And Just Like That…, had been renewed for a second season. The first season saw the return of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristen Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) as they navigated their lives in a “post-pandemic” New York City—minus Samantha Jones. (Kim Cattrall openly said she had no desire to bring back her beloved character—but seems to have changed her mind; see the update below.) According to an official press release, And Just Like That… had the strongest debut of any HBO Max (now simply Max) series to date. Parker, Davis, and Nixon all serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Michael Patrick King.

“I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters played by these powerful, amazing actors,” King said in a statement about the show’s renewal. “The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That… our Sex life is back.”

Details are slowly coming out about what’s in store for next season, which will include an important figure from Carrie’s past. Below, read on for what we know so far.

Kim Cattrall will reprise her role as Samantha Jones.

Despite not returning to the Sex and the City universe for the revival’s first season, Cattrall is confirmed to make a cameo appearance as Samantha in season two, Variety reports.

Cattrall will appear in one scene, reportedly shot in New York City. Variety notes that she did not interact with her former costars, including Parker, or with showrunner King. The scene reportedly involves a phone conversation with Carrie. (The last we heard of Samantha in AJLT was in the season one finale, when she and Carrie reconciled over text and made plans to see each other in person.)

Cattrall’s reps and Max have yet to publicly confirm the cameo. The outlet also confirmed that famed SATC costume designer Patricia Field (who did not handle fashion for the revival) returned specifically to style Cattrall for the highly anticipated cameo.

Carrie is finding her groove again for season two.

In a new trailer for the upcoming second season of And Just Like That… Carrie is having harmless, casual sex again following the death of her husband, Mr. Big (Chris Noth), in season one. All seems to be going well until (you guessed it) her ex-fiancé Aidan arrives back on her doorstep. There’s no way this could go wrong. See the full trailer below.

Season two has completed filming.

After months of filming and dozens of on-set pics, production has ended on And Just Like That… season two. Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed the news herself, posting a candid blurry pic from what seems to be the show’s wrap party, as she gives costar Nicole Ari Parker a kiss on the cheek.

“Wrap parties=kissing. But not goodbye,” SJP captioned the photo. “@nicoleariparker you ALWAYS smell so good. @justlikethatmax a season of love. Crew, cast you were ALL heavenly. X, Your SJ.”

John Corbett will join the show as Aidan.

Aidan fans, rejoice: Carrie Bradshaw’s second great love is coming back. Deadline confirmed that Corbett has joined the cast of the revival to play the lovable furniture maker in a multi-episode arc.

Aidan was notably missing from the first season, unmentioned despite being a (presumed) longtime friend of Miranda’s husband, Steve. The news also comes a full year after My Big Fat Greek Wedding actor Corbett teased his return in April 2021, saying, “I think I might be in quite a few [episodes].” King later confirmed to Deadline that there was never a plan for Aidan to return in season one, which was focused on Carrie’s grieving journey after Big’s death.

While there’s no hint of his storyline yet, when we last saw Aidan in the controversial film sequel Sex and the City 2, he was married with three kids. Maybe we’ll finally meet the mysterious Kathy.

Sarah Jessica Parker also shared a series of photos of the pair on set on Instagram, writing, “Shh. Don’t tell anyone.” to tease Aidan’s return.

Weeks later, she shared another image of the two sharing a dramatic kiss with the caption “This. Is. Not. A. Drill.”

Sam Smith is also joining the cast.

Global musical superstar Sam Smith posted a sneak-peek image on Instagram of themself on the set of And Just Like That… in New York City.

“Up to something unholy on set,” they wrote alongside the photo. It’s unclear what Smith’s role will be and whether they’re portraying a recurring character or simply doing a cameo.

Yes, there will be more Che Diaz.

In new on-set images for season two, Parker was photographed strolling with Sara Ramirez, who plays nonbinary podcaster and comedian Che Diaz—a new addition to the SATC universe in season one of AJLT—on a rainy New York City day. Wonder what they were talking about!

HBO execs know about all the conversation around the series.

And Just Like That… became a conversation starter as soon as it debuted in December 2021. The show’s first season featured a number of culture-shifting moments, including the death of Big (followed by multiple women making sexual assault allegations against actor Noth), the absence of Samantha, the writing-out of Stanford Blatch after Willie Garson’s death, and of course the introduction of the nonbinary Diaz, who prompted Miranda to reconsider her sexuality.

Sarah Aubrey, HBO’s head of original content, alluded to the dialogue around the show in a statement regarding the series’ return. “We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much,” she said. “We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season 2!”
