These Were the 5 Best Speeches From the 2018 SAG Awards

The moments ranged from witty quips to addressing the Time’s Up movement.

With the 2018 SAG Awards officially wrapped, it’s time to take a look at some of what is sure to be the evening’s most talked-about moments—namely, the speeches. From witty quips to more serious discussions about ageism and the Time’s Up movement, the awards show wasn’t short on using thank you speeches as platforms for bigger and meatier moments. Below, the top five.

Sam Rockwell tips his hat to Time’s Up

After winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his part in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Sam Rockwell was one of the few winning men of the night to acknowledge the Time’s Up movement in Hollywood. (Consider that, at the Golden Globes, men were practically radio silent.) Rockwell spoke for the need for equality in the industry, and said that he’s proud to “stand shoulder to shoulder” with women in the fight for progress.

Morgan Freeman is peak unbothered

Accepting his Life Achievement Award from Rita Moreno, actor Morgan Freeman delivered a short but entertaining speech that began with Freeman scolding a fellow audience member—they remain anonymous—for not paying attention while he was speaking. “I’m talking to you,” he pointed out. The speech then went on to critique the sexist statues on stage inside the venue. “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with this statue,” he said, pointing to a statue onstage. “It works from the back, but from the front, it’s gender specific.”

Nicole Kidman tackles ageism

Nicole Kidman won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for her critically acclaimed role in Big Little Lies. In her speech, she made a powerful point about ageism in Hollywood: “How wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old,” she said, to cheers from the audience. “Twenty years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives—that’s not the case now.”

Alexander Skarsgård pokes fun at himself

Alexander Skarsgård beat out actors such as Jeff Daniels and Robert De Niro for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his role in Big Little Lies—and he was very self-aware about the win. “A lot of people have been talking about who is the greatest male actor ever,” he said. “Is it Mr. Robert De Niro, or the tall dude from True Blood? The thespians have spoken. Thank you very much.”

Frances McDormand remains iconic

Actress Frances McDormand won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, a film that swept the night. And, much like her Golden Globes speech, she delivered a sassy—and memorable—speech. She particularly threw shade at the SAG panel for shunning younger actresses, saying, “There’s a lot of young ones coming up, and they need doorstops too. Let’s think about that. Bye.”
