On Sunday night, Esquire cover star Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. The Weeknd, will combine forces with smooth jazz savant Kenny G for a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the American Music Awards. According to the Associated Press, the two are coming together to perform a jazzy rendition of The Weeknd’s hit single “In Your Eyes.” The Weeknd is also scheduled to perform “Save Your Tears”—his latest single from 2020’s After Hours. While some of the performances for this year’s ceremony have been pre-taped, The Weeknd and Kenny G will perform live, bringing a much needed jolt of excitement to an otherwise sluggish and socially-distanced awards season.

With 8 nominations, The Weeknd is tied with rapper Roddy Ricch for the most nominated artist. The two will compete against Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Post Malone for the evening’s top prize — Artist of the Year. Aside from the whole global pandemic thing, 2020 has been a pretty good year for The Weeknd. After Hours debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, and within a week of its release, 10 of the album’s 14 songs appeared on the Top 40 singles chart. In April, his song “Blinding Lights” got its very own viral TikTok dance, and in August, he was on the cover of Esquire. What more could a Starboy want? Evidently the opportunity to bare his soul alongside certified sax man Kenny G, and who can blame him?

Unfortunately, there won’t be an audience to witness this on-stage magic in person, but we’re guessing the duo’s chemistry will be strong enough to translate digitally. For those interested in tuning in, the show will air on ABC at 8 p.m. EST and can be accessed via live TV streaming services including Hulu and YouTube.

Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, BTS, Megan Thee Stallion, Shawn Mendes, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Bebe Rexha with Doja Cat, Dan + Shay, Lewis Capaldi, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Baby, Nelly, and Bell Biv DeVoe are also scheduled to perform.
