The tiny Long Island town is a charming—and quiet—respite from the hustle and bustle of the city
Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Ah, the Fourth of July: BBQs, parades, concerts, fireworks, picnics, and, if you’re Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss, inflatable waterslides that are most definitely for adults and not children. While Independence Day often requires nothing more than a backyard, a few friends, and a grill, the patriotic holiday is a great excuse to get the heck out of the city and make a beeline (“beeline” being the Long Island Railroad, or if you’re so inclined, the good old-fashioned Jitney) to the charming, untainted beaches of Southampton.
The tiny Long Island town, which is made up of several different villages and hamlets including Quogue, Sag Harbor, and Bridgehampton, is just a stone’s throw from New York City. Oft considered to be a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan (and a scenic oasis for the monied set), Southampton is home—at least for the summer—for celebrities like Calvin Klein, Tory Burch, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Lopez, and Christie Brinkley, to name just a few. Jackson Pollock, Roy Litchenstein, and Tom Wolfe have also called the seaside town home. But there’s more to the Hamptons than just impeccable mansions, pristine pools, and flagrant displays of wealth. From art galleries and hiking trails to seaside watering holes and seven-plus miles of shoreline largely devoid of people, consider Southampton for your Fourth of July destination, and shop CR’s picks, below, to do so in style.
Bob: In 34 years as a LEO, I have found something all criminals have in common, they ignore the law. It does not matter what the laws are, the law breakers will break them. This is why gun control has proven so ineffective at reducing crime. The law abiding obey the laws, the law breakers break the laws. American inner cities, which have the strictest gun control laws always have the highest crime rates. Leftists like to claim its because the law breakers can get guns from outside those inner cities, yet that argument falls flat as the areas outside the inner cities where guns are most easily obtained don't have the violence rates the inner cities do. Mexico has a single gun store for civilians. They have effectively disarmed the law abiding through gun control, yet a single Mexican city, Tijuana had 2512 homicides in 2018, which is almost double the number of homicides the the entire state of Texas, which allows concealed carry, had that year. Politicians are looking for easy, feel good solutions, to a difficult problem. Easy solutions often cause much more misery because they don't address the real problem. They are so focused on an inanimate object, they ignore the destruction their policies are causing. In Nice, France, a law breaker used a truck to murder 86 people and injured hundreds more, yet the truck takes no action, its merely a tool which goes where the driver directs it. The murder was by the law breaker, not the truck. A few days ago three men, wearing masks, attempted to rob several people in Conyers, Ga. and shot at the homeowner. The homeowner used a semiautomatic rifle to protect himself, his family, and community. The homeowner used that tool for protection, the robbers attempted to use that tool for robbery and homicide. The law breakers didn't live long enough to learn robbery is a dead end career. Strict gun control would have only disarmed the homeowner who was law abiding. Gun control is like cutting the horns off of a gazelle to stop the cheetah from killing the gazelle. The challenge is in forming laws that target the illegal use and possession of the tool by the lawless, not restricting the law abiding from access and use of the tool. Another hard fact, in 2018, El Paso, Texas, had 23 homicides, yet right across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, there were 1247 homicides. That is the effect when politicians deny the law abiding their natural right to protect themselves by disarming the law abiding.
