Median income varies from state to state, but it also varies greatly within a state itself — and your congressional voting district could actually say a lot about how wealthy your area is.

GOBankingRates identified the wealthiest congressional district in every state based on the highest median household income. We also identified the political party representing each of the wealthy districts. But just because a congressional district is the richest in a state, it doesn’t mean that its constituents are rolling in dough: In 12 states, the median household income in the wealthiest congressional district is below the national median income of $57,617.

50. Congressional District 4 — Mississippi

  • Median Household Income: $43,173

  • Representative: Steven Palazzo

Mississippi’s fourth district is the richest in the state, but it’s the poorest of all the state’s richest congressional districts. The state’s fourth district also has the lowest average household income of any of the state’s richest congressional districts, with a mean household income of $57,873. Fortunately, Mississippi has the lowest cost of living in America, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

Mississippi’s fourth district includes the cities of Hattiesburg and Biloxi. Republican Steven Palazzo has been representing the district since 2011.

Even the wealthiest congressional district in West Virginia has a median household income that is well below the national median — but thanks to low living costs, West Virginia is one of the best states for poor Americans, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

Republican Alex Mooney has been representing West Virginia’s second district in Congress since 2015. The state’s second district cuts through the middle of the state, and contains the city of Charleston.

  • Median Household Income: $47,990

  • Representative: Michelle Lujan Grisham

New Mexico is one of the worst states for families to live a richer life, according to a separate GOBankingRates study. That’s mainly due to the low income throughout the state — even in the wealthiest congressional district.

New Mexico’s first congressional district is the smallest district in area, but it contains the city of Albuquerque. Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham has held her current post since 2013. She is one of only 16 Democrats who are representatives of the richest district in their state.

  • Representative: French Hill

Arkansas’ second congressional district is home to the capital city of Little Rock and the zip code 72223, which is the most expensive zip code in the state, a separate GOBankingRates study found. Republican French Hill has represented the district since 2015.

  • Representative: Greg Gianforte

Montana is one of seven states that only has one congressional district, so Representative Greg Gianforte is the only congressperson for the state. The Republican congressman has held the position since 2017.

Idaho is divided into two congressional districts, and the first district includes Coeur d’Alene and the outskirts of Boise. Republican Raúl Labrador has been the representative for Idaho’s first congressional district since 2011.

Like Montana, the entire state of South Dakota is one congressional district. Republican Kristi Noem has served as the state’s congresswoman since 2011.

Tennessee is split up into nine congressional districts, and the eighth district is the wealthiest. The district contains the city of Jackson. Republican David Kustoff has been the representative for the Tennessee district since 2017.

Democrat Peter Welch represents all of Vermont, as the state has only one congressional district. He has been the congressman for the state since 2007.

Portland and Augusta are both located in Maine’s first congressional district. Democrat Chelli Pingree has served as its congresswoman since 2009.

Most of Louisiana’s major cities are located outside the state’s sixth congressional district, though it contains the surrounding areas of Baton Rouge. Since 2015, Republican Garret Graves has represented the district in Congress.

Des Moines is located in Iowa’s third congressional district, the state’s richest district. Republican David Young has been the district’s congressman since 2015.

Florida is divided into 27 congressional districts, and the fourth congressional district sits on the northeast coast of the state. It includes the Jacksonville suburbs. Republican John Rutherford has represented the district since 2017.

Democrat David Price is currently the second longest-serving representative in Congress. He has held the position of congressman for North Carolina’s fourth district since 1997. The congressional district includes Raleigh.

Democrat Suzanne Bonamici has represented Oregon’s first congressional district since 2012. The district includes the Portland metro area, though Portland itself is located in a different district.

Utah’s third congressional district — which includes the city of Provo — is the wealthiest in the state. Republican John Curtis has represented the district since 2017.

The representative spot for Ohio’s wealthiest district is currently vacant after Republican Pat Tiberi retired. The primary elections to fill the vacancy have already taken place, and the next round of voting will take place on Aug. 7, 2018. Ohio’s 12th congressional district — which includes the cities of Columbus and Zanesville — has typically been represented by a Republican candidate.

Arizona’s fifth district is small in area but large in wealth. It includes Apache Junction, Chandler, Mesa and Gilbert — the latter being of the best places to sell a home in America, a separate GOBankingRates study found. Republican Andy Biggs has held his congressman position in the district since 2017.

Kansas’s third congressional district borders Missouri and is the nearest district in the state to Kansas City. Republican Kevin Yoder has represented the district in Congress since 2011.

New Hampshire’s first congressional district sits on the southeast border of the state and includes the cities of Manchester and Laconia. Democrat Carol Shea-Porter has represented the state’s first congressional district since 2017.

Colorado’s sixth congressional district contains the city of Centennial. Republican Mike Coffman has served as congressman for the district since 2009.

The 11th congressional district is the wealthiest of Michigan’s 14 districts. The area has been represented by Republican Dave Trott since 2015.

14. Congressional District 2 — Missouri

  • Median Household Income: $76,996

  • Representative: Ann Wagner

Republican Ann Wagner has represented Missouri’s wealthiest district — which includes suburbs of St. Louis — since 2013. Healthcare — a field that has many high-paying jobs — is the leading industry in the district.

13. Congressional District 3 — Minnesota

  • Median Household Income: $81,804

  • Representative: Erik Paulsen

Minnesota’s third congressional district contains the cities of Chanhassen and Brooklyn Park. Republican Erik Paulsen has represented the district since 2009.

12. Congressional District 6 — Georgia

  • Median Household Income: $82,390

  • Representative: Karen Handel

Georgia’s sixth congressional district is home to Chamblee. Republican Karen Handel has served on behalf of the district in Congress since 2017.

11. Congressional District 7 — Pennsylvania

  • Median Household Income: $82,483

  • Representative: Vacant

The representative spot for Pennsylvania’s seventh congressional district, which contains the Lehigh Valley, is currently vacant. The candidates for the spot are Republican Martin Nothstein and Democrat Susan Ellis Wild. The district is actually a new district. It was created in 2018 when districts were redrawn per Pennsylvania Supreme Court orders.

  • Representative: Suzan DelBene

Washington’s first congressional district has been represented by Democrat Suzen DelBene since 2012. The district is home to the city of Sykomish.

9. Congressional District 4 — Connecticut

  • Representative: James Himes

Bridgeport and Stamford are both located in Connecticut’s fourth congressional district. Democrat James Himes has been congressman for the state’s fourth district since 2009.

8. Congressional District 22 — Texas

  • Median Household Income: $90,194

  • Representative: Pete Olson

Sugar Land, Rosenberg and Pearland are located in Texas’s 22nd congressional district, which has been represented by Republican Pete Olson since 2009. The majority of the workforce in the district works in management occupations.

  • Median Household Income: $91,203

  • Representative: Joseph Kennedy III

Fall River and Taunton are located in Massachusetts’ fourth congressional district. Democrat Joseph Kennedy III has served as congressman for the district since 2013. And yes, he is part of the Kennedy political dynasty: His father is Joseph Kennedy II, who served as a member of the House of Representatives, his grandfather was Senator Robert Kennedy and JFK was his great uncle.

  • Median Household Income: $93,839

  • Representative: Peter Roskam

Republican Peter Roskam has represented Illinois’ wealthiest district since 2007. The sixth congressional district of Illinois includes some of the Chicago suburbs.

  • Representative: Jamie Raskin

Democrat Jamie Raskin has represented Maryland’s eighth congressional district since 2017. Westminster and Eldersburg are located in the wealthy district.

New York’s third congressional district is part of New York City and includes Queens, Suffolk County and Nassau County. Democrat Thomas Suozzi has represented the district since 2017.

Democrat Anna Eshoo has been the representative for California’s 18th congressional district since 2013. The district is home to Silicon Valley –the location of the best tech companies — and the cities of Cupertino, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose and Santa Cruz. Although it has the second-highest median household income, the district has the highest average income at $165,342.

Although California is home to the second-, third- and ninth-richest congressional districts in the country overall, not every California representative is rich. In fact, David Valadao, who represents California’s 21st congressional district, is the poorest member of Congress, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

1. Congressional District 10 — Virginia

  • Median Household Income: $116,069

  • Representative: Barbara Comstock

With a median household income of over $116,000, Virginia’s 10th congressional is the richest congressional district in Virginia — and in the country. Its median household income is more than double the median household income for the U.S. as a whole. The district sits on the state’s northern border and includes the city of Winchester. The area has been represented by Republican Barbara Comstock since 2015.

The Wealthiest Congressional Districts Across America

The majority of the wealthiest congressional districts in each state currently have a Republican representative. Only 16 of the 50 states have a Democrat as the representative for its richest district, and two of the wealthiest congressional districts are currently vacant.

Methodology: The study analyzed every congressional district in all 50 states, determining the wealthiest congressional districts based on the highest median household income, sourced from the Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Survey. The mean household income was included in our data for representational purposes. Information on representatives and political parties was sourced from GovTrack.

The representative spot for Ohio’s wealthiest district is currently vacant after Republican Pat Tiberi retired. The primary elections to fill the vacancy have already taken place, and the next round of voting will take place on Aug. 7, 2018. Ohio’s 12th congressional district — which includes the cities of Columbus and Zanesville — has typically been represented by a Republican candidate.

Arizona’s fifth district is small in area but large in wealth. New Hampshire’s first congressional district sits on the southeast border of the state and includes the cities of Manchester and Laconia. Democrat Carol Shea-Porter has represented the state’s first congressional district since 2017.

Colorado’s sixth congressional district contains the city of Centennial. Republican Mike Coffman has served as congressman for the district since 2009.

The 11th congressional district is the wealthiest of Michigan’s 14 districts. The area has been represented by Republican Dave Trott since 2015.

Republican Ann Wagner has represented Missouri’s wealthiest district — which includes suburbs of St. Louis — since 2013. Healthcare — a field that has many high-paying jobs — is the leading industry in the district.

Minnesota’s third congressional district contains the cities of Chanhassen and Brooklyn Park. Republican Erik Paulsen has represented the district since 2009.

Georgia’s sixth congressional district is home to Chamblee. Republican Karen Handel has served on behalf of the district in Congress since 2017.

The representative spot for Pennsylvania’s seventh congressional district, which contains the Lehigh Valley, is currently vacant. The candidates for the spot are Republican Martin Nothstein and Democrat Susan Ellis Wild. The district is actually a new district. It was created in 2018 when districts were redrawn per Pennsylvania Supreme Court orders.

Sugar Land, Rosenberg and Pearland are located in Texas’s 22nd congressional district, which has been represented by Republican Pete Olson since 2009. The majority of the workforce in the district works in management occupations.

Fall River and Taunton are located in Massachusetts’ fourth congressional district. Democrat Joseph Kennedy III has served as congressman for the district since 2013. And yes, he is part of the Kennedy political dynasty: His father is Joseph Kennedy II, who served as a member of the House of Representatives, his grandfather was Senator Robert Kennedy and JFK was his great uncle.

New York’s third congressional district is part of New York City and includes Queens, Suffolk County and Nassau County. Democrat Thomas Suozzi has represented the district since 2017.

Democrat Anna Eshoo has been the representative for California’s 18th congressional district since 2013. The district is home to Silicon Valley —the location of the best tech companies — and the cities of Cupertino, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose and Santa Cruz. Although it has the second-highest median household income, the district has the highest average income at $165,342.

Although California is home to the second-, third- and ninth-richest congressional districts in the country overall, not every California representative is rich. In fact, David Valadao, who represents California’s 21st congressional district, is the poorest member of Congress, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

1. Congressional District 10 — Virginia

  • Median Household Income: $116,069

  • Representative: Barbara Comstock

With a median household income of over $116,000, Virginia’s 10th congressional is the richest congressional district in Virginia — and in the country. Its median household income is more than double the median household income for the U.S. as a whole. The district sits on the state’s northern border and includes the city of Winchester. The area has been represented by Republican Barbara Comstock since 2015.

The Wealthiest Congressional Districts Across America

The majority of the wealthiest congressional districts in each state currently have a Republican representative. Only 16 of the 50 states have a Democrat as the representative for its richest district, and two of the wealthiest congressional districts are currently vacant.

The mean household income was included in our data for representational purposes. Information on representatives and political parties was sourced from GovTrack.
