These Are the Wealthiest Congressional Districts Across America

Median income varies from state to state, but it also varies greatly within a state itself — and your congressional voting district could actually say a lot about how wealthy your area is.
GOBankingRates identified the wealthiest congressional district in every state based on the highest median household income. We also identified the political party representing each of the wealthy districts. But just because a congressional district is the richest in a state, it doesn’t mean that its constituents are rolling in dough: In 12 states, the median household income in the wealthiest congressional district is below the national median income of $57,617.

50. Congressional District 4 — Mississippi
Median Household Income: $43,173
Representative: Steven Palazzo
Mississippi’s fourth district is the richest in the state, but it’s the poorest of all the state’s richest congressional districts. The state’s fourth district also has the lowest average household income of any of the state’s richest congressional districts, with a mean household income of $57,873. Fortunately, Mississippi has the lowest cost of living in America, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

Even the wealthiest congressional district in West Virginia has a median household income that is well below the national median — but thanks to low living costs, West Virginia is one of the best states for poor Americans, a separate GOBankingRates study found.
Republican Alex Mooney has been representing West Virginia’s second district in Congress since 2015. The state’s second district cuts through the middle of the state, and contains the city of Charleston.

New Mexico is one of the worst states for families to live a richer life, according to a separate GOBankingRates study. That’s mainly due to the low income throughout the state — even in the wealthiest congressional district.
New Mexico’s first congressional district is the smallest district in area, but it contains the city of Albuquerque. Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham has held her current post since 2013. She is one of only 16 Democrats who are representatives of the richest district in their state.

Minnesota’s third congressional district contains the cities of Chanhassen and Brooklyn Park. Republican Erik Paulsen has represented the district since 2009.

Sugar Land, Rosenberg and Pearland are located in Texas’s 22nd congressional district, which has been represented by Republican Pete Olson since 2009. The majority of the workforce in the district works in management occupations.

Fall River and Taunton are located in Massachusetts’ fourth congressional district. Democrat Joseph Kennedy III has served as congressman for the district since 2013. And yes, he is part of the Kennedy political dynasty: His father is Joseph Kennedy II, who served as a member of the House of Representatives, his grandfather was Senator Robert Kennedy and JFK was his great uncle.

Although it has the second-highest median household income, the district has the highest average income at $165,342.
Although California is home to the second-, third- and ninth-richest congressional districts in the country overall, not every California representative is rich. In fact, David Valadao, who represents California’s 21st congressional district, is the poorest member of Congress, a separate GOBankingRates study found.

Median Household Income: $116,069
Representative: Barbara Comstock
With a median household income of over $116,000, Virginia’s 10th congressional is the richest congressional district in Virginia — and in the country. Its median household income is more than double the median household income for the U.S. as a whole. The district sits on the state’s northern border and includes the city of Winchester. The area has been represented by Republican Barbara Comstock since 2015.
The Wealthiest Congressional Districts Across America
The majority of the wealthiest congressional districts in each state currently have a Republican representative. Only 16 of the 50 states have a Democrat as the representative for its richest district, and two of the wealthiest congressional districts are currently vacant.

Methodology: The study analyzed every congressional district in all 50 states, determining the wealthiest congressional districts based on the highest median household income, sourced from the Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Survey. The mean household income was included in our data for representational purposes. Information on representatives and political parties was sourced from GovTrack.

Although it has the second-highest median household income, the district has the highest average income at $165,342.

1. Congressional District 10 — Virginia
Median Household Income: $116,069
Representative: Barbara Comstock
With a median household income of over $116,000, Virginia’s 10th congressional is the richest congressional district in Virginia — and in the country. Its median household income is more than double the median household income for the U.S. as a whole. The district sits on the state’s northern border and includes the city of Winchester. The area has been represented by Republican Barbara Comstock since 2015.

The majority of the wealthiest congressional districts in each state currently have a Republican representative. Only 16 of the 50 states have a Democrat as the representative for its richest district, and two of the wealthiest congressional districts are currently vacant.
