After an uncertain start by Tadej Pogačar, it looks like we are going to get to see the battle we were all praying for. The Slovenian was, understandably, a little tentative early on having only recently recovered from a fractured wrist, but he had to pull something special out of the bag to close the gap to Jonas Vingegaard, and boy did he.
The two-time Tour de France champion dug deep on Thursday to pip the reigning champion at the post, narrowing Vingegaard's lead to 25 seconds. They're way ahead of the chasing pack, with former leader Jai Hindley one minute and nine seconds behind Pogačar going into Stage 7.
It's a stage for the sprinters, with the going almost entirely flat but for the gently rising Côte de Béguey. Stage 8 on Saturday starts flat but the going gets lumpier during the latter half of the 201km route, with the Côte de Masmont and Côte de Condat-sur-Vienne popping up late on before a climbing finish.
Stage 9 takes things up or notch, with the the Puy de Dôme making its first return to the Tour de France route since 1988. The last 4.3km of the slog up the volcano average more than 11%, and it's only the prospect of the first rest day of the race that will get some of the riders through it.
