Pop culture obsessives have just been given their second movie about the king of rock'n'roll, Elvis Presley, in as many years. In 2022's Elvis, Baz Luhrmann imagined the meteoric rise of the titular singer (Austin Butler) through the eyes of Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). In this year's A24 biopic Priscilla, director Sofia Coppola zooms in on Presley's relationship with Priscilla Beaulieau, née Wagner, who would go on to become his wife, and tells her side of the story.

Based on Priscilla's 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, the film begins in 1949, when she first meets Elvis at the age of 14. It follows their courtship and eventual marriage, during which Priscilla found herself continually isolated and distressed by his infidelities and substance abuse issues, until their separation in 1973.

Priscilla is played as both a child and an adult by Cailee Spaeny (Devs), while Elvis is portrayed by Euphoria and Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi. Coppola did not have access to any of Elvis' iconic music while making Priscilla, but this informs the movie itself, which is far less about his public performances and more about Priscilla's experience of who Elvis was behind the gates of Graceland, away from the eyes and ears of his adoring fans.

Critics have described the film as "a tender yet clear-eyed look at the often toxic blend created by mixing first love and fame" and praised its treatment of themes such as fame, privilege, and femininity which fit neatly into Sofia Coppola's wider body of work.

How can I watch Priscilla?

Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September and a limited release in October, Priscilla is now screening in theaters as of November 3.

Is Priscilla on streaming?

For now, the only way to watch Priscilla is in theaters, and the film likely won't be given a home or streaming release until early 2024. In the meantime, however, you can watch Austin Butler strut his stuff as the King in Elvis, which is now available on streaming.
