“It’s going to be super fun,” Olivia Rodrigo said of her MTV VMAs 2021 performance while on the red carpet. “There’s going to be dancing, sparkles, and maybe even a little flying.”
That description mostly came to fruition during her performance of “good 4 u,” which doubled as her VMAs debut. She wore a cute corseted minidress with matching gloves and a host of backup dancers going along with the prom theme Olivia was drawn to with Sour. The song is perfect for belting at karaoke, and Olivia brought that delightfully angsty energy as the crowd jammed along — you could clearly hear fans shouting every word. (And the camera smash at the end… chef's kiss.)
Right after she performed, she returned to the stage pretty much immediately. She won a VMA for “drivers license” for Song of the Year and thanked fans in her speech. “This has been the most magical year of my life and this is all because of you guys,” she said. "I wanna dedicate this award to all of the other girls who write songs on their bedroom floor. There are a lot of people who will try to dim your light, but speaking your mind and sharing your heart are the most beautiful things in the world."
Olivia has had a whirlwind year of milestone after milestone since the release of her instant hit “drivers license.” She recently reflected on the devastating song in an interview with Bowen Yang for V Magazine, saying that it doesn't feel quite so devastating anymore. “This is such a sad song, but it feels so euphoric for me,” she told Yang. “And I’m so happy. I feel so proud of myself and how far I’ve come. And really, those songs are just like a reminder of that and that journey that I’ve gone through. So I don’t get sad listening to it anymore.”
