Olivia Rodrigo performed “Good 4 U” at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, bringing some much-needed 2000s angst to the ceremony. (Okay, Rodrigo is only 18 years old, but her vibe is Avril Lavigne meets Paramore meets Hot Topic, with some Taylor Swift thrown in.)
Nominated for artist of the year, best new artist, song of the year (for “Drivers License”), push performance of the year (for “Drivers License”), and best pop (for “Good 4 U”), Rodrigo rocked the stage like a seasoned legend. And as I said, she’s only 18.
Her blue-and-purple tutu dress (Heaven by Marc Jacobs) was a serve. Plus, there was choreography! Angsty vocals! Pyrotechnics! And she cracked the camera at the end!
Her inspiration and mentor Taylor Swift was also nominated for her song and video “Willow,” as well as for artist of the year. Hosted by Doja Cat, the MTV VMAs were originally going to feature a performance from Rodrigo’s fellow pop queen Lorde, but she dropped out a week or so before the event. Other performers from the night included Camila Cabello, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X, and Shawn Mendes.
Olivia Rodrigo has been on a hot streak lately, with her debut album Sour charting for weeks, the second season of her show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series dropping on Disney Plus, and of course, a visit to our nation’s capital to encourage her fellow Zoomers to get vaccinated.
“I am beyond honored and humbled to be here today to help spread the message about the importance of youth vaccination,” she said. “I am in awe of the work President Biden and Dr. Fauci have done and was happy to help lend my support.”
And Biden himself tweeted, “Olivia Rodrigo is stopping by the White House today with a clear message to young people: Get vaccinated. It’s the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from the dangerous new COVID-19 variants.”
