Watch: Matt Calvert improvises after breakaway bobble, scores wonder goal
Matt Calvert couldn’t have done it again if he tried.
Sprung in on a breakaway in the second period of Game 5 versus the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ bottom-six forward haplessly saw the puck bounce on him as he cocked back to release, resulting in a misfire. But able to display the sort of skillset that would belie his historical production, Calvert quickly corralled the puck on his backhand and initiated his backup plan — and a move no one could have seen coming.
Without hesitation, he spun on a dime and was able to sweep the puck around Braden Holtby and into the back of the net — pulling the Blue Jackets even in the most unlikely fashion.

Calvert’s incredible improvisation actually marked his second goal of the afternoon.
Scored in far more standard fashion, however, his shorthanded tally failed to warrant a post.
