2022 is the 76th anniversary of the song "(Back Home Again in) Indiana," being performed as part of the pre-race ceremony at the Indy 500.

For many Hoosiers, the lyrics of returning home to Indiana were especially meaningful.

An estimated 325,000 people packed the stands Sunday to watch the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway — the largest crowd of spectators since the COVID-19 pandemic shriveled attendance the past two years.

Cornelison's sixth turn at singing "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" is the longest consecutive streak for a vocalist except for Jim Nabors, who performed the song 36 times between 1972 and 2014.

Cornelison was accompanied by the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band, which had been playing at the race since 1919.
