  • After jumping into view in a form-fitting blue outfit Nia, 22, posed and flipped her hair before getting into the real action: a floor routine on the steps that left the crowd gasping.

  • Commenters on an Instagram video of the Met performance were quick to praise Nia, one writing “this is so good it makes me want to go watch Beyoncé Homecoming Coachella.”

Stars sauntered down the red carpet at the Met Gala Monday night but few did it with as much panache as UCLA gymnast Nia Dennis, who kicked off the night with a routine right on the museum’s iconic steps.

After jumping into view in a form-fitting blue outfit Nia, 22, posed and flipped her hair before getting into the real action.

In the blink of an eye, she was hurtling through the air, executing several impressive flips. And, from my untrained eye (unless you count my multiple viewings of Netflix’s Cheer) appears to land a double back handspring, all set to music from the Brooklyn United Marching Band.

Honestly, pretty epic. Let's break it down a bit here:

Nia was a guest of Stella McCartney, the designer of the gorgeous blue bodysuit. She told Vogue, “I feel like Superwoman.”

The theme of this year’s ball was "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," so Nia fittingly performed to several songs that she called distinctly American “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys, “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars, and “American Boy” by Kanye West featuring Estelle.

Nia came into the public eye after her college gymnastics routines (set to music from Black artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Missy Elliott, Soulja Boy, Tupac Shakur, and Megan Thee Stallion) went viral last year. Her routines were odes to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Commenters on an Instagram video of the Met performance were quick to praise Nia, one writing “this is so good it makes me want to go watch Beyoncé Homecoming Coachella.”

As if I needed another reason to rewatch yet another American classic!
