Last month, Beyoncé did what she does best and surprise-dropped the first trailer for her visual album, Black Is King. This morning, a new trailer for the July 31st Disney+ film also dropped and serves as a reminder that the wait is almost over. Here it is:
The new project was all Bey: She wrote, directed, and executive-produced it. If you watch the trailer closely, too, you'll see members of her family, including her mother, Tina Lawson, and her husband, Jay-Z. You'll also see Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o, and Kelly Rowland.
The film is a reimagining of the story of Disney's The Lion King, in which Beyoncé starred as Nala last year. The album will feature songs from The Lion King: The Gift; Bey's album that was released alongside the film last year.
She narrates the trailer and begins:
"You were formed by the heat of the galaxy. What a thing to be both unique and familiar. To be one in the same and, still, unlike any other. ‘Life is a set of choices. Lead or be led astray. Follow your light or lose it."
Disney and Parkwood Entertainment released a statement about the project, via Variety, last month: "The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future."
In a post on June 28, Bey shared her own thoughts about the album: "Black Is King is a labor of love. It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year. I've given it my all and now it's yours."
