Dateline: Along Came Sarah (9 p.m., NBC)

Keith Morrison reports on a Texas woman connected to the mysterious deaths of her husband and a former partner. When Sarah Jean Hartsfield’s fifth husband died this year under suspicious circumstances, an investigation revealed the “mother of four to be a charismatic charmer with a past full of alleged infidelities, spurned lovers, wild allegations and even a fiancé she shot to death.”

Hartsfield, a former Army sergeant who served as Sarah Dohonue, said she killed her fiancé in Minnesota in self-defense in 2018. That case was later reopened. An ex-boyfriend says he had a “suspicious house fire” after breaking up with her. A Texas sheriff told an NBC affiliate in Houston that Hartsfield “had been married five times in relationships that often ended under grim circumstances.”

Morrison goes cross-country on this story — from Baytown, Texas to Douglas County, Minnesota — to unravel Hartsfield’s past. He also has interviews with her daughter, Ashley Donohue, and her son, Ryan Donohue.

Charles: In His Own Words (10 p.m., National Geographic — plus streaming on Hulu / Disney+)

*Programming note: This documentary streams on Hulu on April 29 and on Disney+ on May 5.

“Charles: In His Own Words” is a history of one of the most scrutinized public figures in the world — man some have called “the Rebel Prince” — through a collection of rare archival material.

The documentary explores his relationships with his current wife, Camilla, Queen Consort; and with his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales.

From National Geographic, the documentary offers a rare view into the real Charles, “back to the beginning, revealing the formative events that have influenced the man, former Prince and the King he was destined to be.” The film is from the creator of “Diana: In Her Own Words,” Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Tom Jennings.

Note: The two-hour film “Diana: In Her Own Words” airs Friday, April 28, at 8 p.m., just before the King Charles doc.

Love & Death (The Max)

This new true-crime limited series from The Max (formerly HBO Max) premiered this week. It covers the case of Texas housewife Candy Montgomery, who killed her friend and neighbor Betty Gore with an ax in 1980. She was arrested and tried for the murder, but ... well, it’s a wild story and we won’t spoil it here.

This isn’t the first time this case has been covered in a prestige cable drama. Last year, Hulu released “Candy,” with Jessica Biel as Candy and Melanie Lynskey as Betty. It’s very good.

“Love & Death” has Elisabeth Olsen (“Wandavision”) as Candy and Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”) as Betty. Jesse Plemmons and Krysten Ritter also star.
