Watch Dakota Fanning's 'Star Trek'-obsessed autistic teen in 'Please Stand By' clip (exclusive)

Dakota Fanning is having a moment, thanks to her turn in TNT’s high-profile adaptation of The Alienist and her starring role in this Friday’s Please Stand By, a new indie drama with a uniquely out-there twist. In director Ben Lewin’s (The Sessions) film, Fanning plays a young woman with autism who loves nothing more than Star Trek an obsession that compels her to embark on an odyssey that’s equal parts daunting and inspiring. Ahead of its debut in theaters and on video on demand this week, we present an exclusive clip from the upcoming release, which co-stars Alice Eve, Michael Stahl-David, Marla Gibbs, Patton Oswalt, and Robin Weigert.

In the above scene, Fanning’s Wendy has one of her regular meetings with Toni Collette’s Scottie, a psychologist who sees Wendy at the San Francisco care home in which she resides. The subject for their chat is Wendy’s daily routine, which she methodically narrates, and which we see play out in a series of comedic vignettes. From handling her laundry to taking a shower to serving customers at Cinnabon to trying to cross the street with her dog, Wendy’s autism makes everyday tasks more difficult than they might otherwise be. However, this Please Stand By passage also indicates that she’s clearly capable of fending for herself which thus makes her ready for her ensuing journey to deliver a Star Trek movie script that she’s written for a contest whose deadline she accidentally missed.

Please Stand By arrives in theaters, On Demand, and on iTunes and Amazon Video this Friday.
