Washington, D.C. is the nation's most frugal city

Forget what you heard about Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson’s $31,000 dining room set for his office: Washington, D.C., is the most frugal city in the country, according to Coupons.com. Yep, the town that’s rung up $21 trillion in national debt apparently loves clipping coupons.

For the second year in a row, the nation’s capital topped the list of bargain hunters, as shoppers in the D.C. area clipped more than 27 million digital coupons in 2017, totaling more than $39 million in savings – a 25% increase over 2016. The seventh annual ranking is compiled by Quotient Technology (QUOT), which runs Coupons.com.

Rounding out the top five frugal cities: Dallas-Ft. Worth, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte and Orlando. Besides their love of a bargain, the top three cheapest towns have something else in common: they are all finalists for Amazon’s (AMZN) second headquarters, HQ2. Given how famously cheap Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is – he made desks out of doors when Amazon started – maybe it’s more than a just coincidence.
