The flu season has officially hit and if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, there might be a way for you to make some extra cash. If you’re willing to give up at least a week of your life and trade freedom for a sore nose and achy muscles, researchers are looking for adults to willingly catch the flu for a research study.
Scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are looking for healthy adults between 18 and 50 years old to get infected with Influenza A, aka the nasty H1N1 virus. Participants will get paid up to $3300 for their time and discomfort in an effort to help researchers better understand how this particular virus strain works—and how to fight it more effectively.
Volunteers in the study will receive a nasal spray containing the active virus and will spend the time in the hospital under observation until they are no longer contagious. If you’re interested in participating, trial sites are located at St. Louis University in Missouri, the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Duke University in North Carolina, and Ohio’s Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical center.
This time of year is really scary for parents who worry about their children catching the flu. We understand now more than ever just how devastating this virus can be and several states are already reporting deaths.
The Centers for Disease Control say that while this time of year, the flu activity is still relatively low, they are urging parents to protect themselves and their kids by getting the flu shots.
According to the University of Virginia Health, symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus hit children hard with a variety of symptoms including fever and chills, sore throat, cough, severe muscle aches, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Results from this research trial are expected to be released in May 2020.
