VOTE: Times-Union Northeast Florida high school Athlete of the Week poll, Sept. 26-Oct. 1

The results are in.

Providence golfer Emma Wells is the Florida Times-Union's fifth Athlete of the Week for the 2022-23 high school sports season, covering the week of Sept. 19-24.

The junior team captain won medalist honors by shooting an even-par 36 at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club, leading Providence to victory against Beachside.

She placed first in a vote that also included top performers Laython Biddle (Bartram Trail football), Chase Carroll (Middleburg boys golf), Jayla Covington (Atlantic Coast girls swimming), Jaycee Davis (Union County volleyball), Kenton Kirkland (Raines football), Gavin Nelson (Mandarin boys cross country), Cameron Watson (Paxon boys swimming) and Lindy White (Ponte Vedra girls cross country).

This week's vote

It's time to vote for Florida Times-Union's Athlete of the Week for the week of September 26-30, 2022.

The Times-Union gathers nominees from scores, stats and nominations e-mailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across Northeast Florida. Coaches can e-mail these stats and scores to preps@jacksonville.com.

This week's voting begins Monday morning and closes at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Here are the nominees for Sept. 26-Oct. 1:

Jillian Candelino, Bolles girls cross country

The senior broke her own school record, running 17:16.23 to win the Alexander/Asics Invitational in Fairburn, Ga.

Sahana Chokshi, Episcopal girls golf

Shot a 37 to win medalist honors in the Eagles' victory against Fernandina Beach at Amelia River.

Orel Gray, University Christian football

The senior running back rushed for 235 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries as UC defeated Providence 49-7 to continue its unbeaten season.

Landon Hale, Yulee football

The senior defensive back returned an interception for a touchdown and blocked a punt in the Hornets' win over Tradition Prep.

Gabriella Marim, Stanton girls swimming

Won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Blue Devils in their victory against Paxon.

Dylan Matthews, Tocoi Creek boys swimming

He won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke to lead the Toros to Tuesday's  victory against St. Joseph.

Tyler Mawhinney, Fleming Island boys golf

He tied a school 9-hole record by shooting a 32 and helped Fleming Island set its new team record with a 136 in Monday's match against Bartram Trail.

Jenna Otts, Bartram Trail volleyball

The senior recorded a career-high 15 aces, together with eight kills and eight digs in a sweep of Beachside.
