Volunteers Rescue More Than 50 Horses from Imelda’s Chest-Deep Floodwaters

It wasn’t just people who needed saving as Tropical Depression Imelda’s relentless rains wrought havoc on the Houston area this week.

As crews participated in the rescues of more than 1,000 residents on Thursday, a team of volunteers and Good Samaritans saved more than 50 horses from chest-deep floodwaters at the Cypress Trails Equestrian Center in Humble.

Zach Karrenbrock told KHOU 11 that the rescue was made particularly challenging because currents from Cypress Creek were running through the property.

Fortunately, thanks to the hard work of volunteers who weren’t afraid to get wet, all the horses were moved to higher ground.

In a Facebook post that afternoon, the equestrian center said all of its horses — and dogs, too — were “safe and dry.”

This isn’t the first time volunteers have come to the aid of Cypress Trails. According to KPRC, rescuers saved about 70 horses from the center when it flooded in 2016.
