'Voice' contestant shuts down Internet trolls with emotional performance

Kyla Jade faced down her haters on The Voice on Monday night when she sang “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Kyla told her coach, Blake Shelton, “My life is this song. I had a guy say, ‘Oh, she has a great voice but I could never look at her in concert.'”

Kyla has struggled with self-esteem her whole life, so she wanted to send a message with this song. “I never felt pretty, so if I can help another girl to realize that she is amazing, then I’ve done what I need to do,” she said. Kyla was crying during rehearsals at one point, and the emotions carried over to the live show, where she struggled to hold it together during the powerful performance.

Following the performance, Kyla got some words of encouragement from Alicia Keys. “I don’t know whoever or whatever systemic institutionalized garbage made you ever feel less than the glorious of goddess that you are,” Alicia told her, “but it is not real.”

While the Internet is full of garbage, it’s also full of love. Following Kyla’s performance, there was an outpouring of support.

So it seems likely that we’ll get to hear Kyla’s beautiful voice on the show again next week.
