The famed device's anniversary is July 1st
Forty years ago today, Sony Music changed not only the cultural landscape of the 80s, but also music consumption forever with the release of the Sony Walkman. The portable MP3 player was sleeker and more affordable than other portable devices at the time, completely putting transistor radios from days of yore to shame. Although more contemporary inventions, such as the Ipod, have rendered the Walkman nearly obsolete, to date, nearly 400 million units have been sold.
