TikToker living in Paris shows what a French grocery store’s ‘American’ food items look like: ‘Popcorn ice cream?’

TikTok users are suddenly obsessed with France’s Picard grocery store.

It’s all thanks to the chain’s so-called “crazy America” week — a promotional event that few TikTokers had ever heard of. But after one user, Sarah Donnelly (@sarahdcomedy), posted an inside look at the store’s “American” offerings, viewers couldn’t get enough of it.

“I get really excited and really sad when it’s American week at Picard,” Donnelly captioned her post.

Donnelly is from the U.S. but lives in Paris, and her video is a tour through the store’s limited-time food items. They feature strange combinations of American staples, including a package of frozen “Pastrami Waffles” and some pretty strange desserts.

“Popcorn ice cream?” Donnelly says, as she zooms in on this novel treat. “No! Popcorn? Yes. Popcorn ice cream? No! Just stop combining things.”

Many of the items, it seemed, were mash-ups of American staples. For example, Donnelly also showed a brownie bar that was somehow fused with cookies and s’mores.

For what it’s worth, the TikToker had some kind words for several of Picard’s “American” options. In her opinion, the grocery chain has “nailed” some traditional fried foods, such as corn dogs.

The video is the latest in an ongoing trend on the app centered around food-based “culture shocks.” Last year, a British TikToker went viral explaining the surprising differences between American and English restaurants. Earlier, an American woman revealed what happened when she ordered “chips and salsa” at a restaurant in Italy.

Donnelly’s video also sparked tons of hilarious comments. Both Americans and non-Americans had plenty to say.

“American cuisine doesn’t exist anyway so…” one user wrote.

“Wouldn’t think twice if you told me popcorn ice cream and pastrami waffles were being sold at Trader Joe’s,” another added.

“‘Why do you combine things?’ Says the country who combined ramen and pizza,” another added.

After the enthusiasm for her first video, Donnelly returned to Picard to film a follow-up TikTok, in a clip that shows her sampling the infamous pastrami waffles for herself. After a few issues heating one up, she admitted: “I have to be honest. It’s not bad.”
