Can you really turn Rice Krispies into Christmas trees?

It’s officially holiday cooking season, and viral recipes are everywhere. But this dessert hack — which makes beautiful, edible green trees out of cereal — might be the best of them all.

How to make ‘Christmas trees’ out of Rice Krispies Treats

There are similar food hacks like this all over the internet, but these particular trees are based loosely on a recipe over at the Cooking Classy food blog. Here’s what you’ll need for it:

  • 3 tablespoons of butter

  • 10-ounce bag of marshmallows (mini-marshmallows work best)

  • Green food coloring

  • 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal

  • Sprinkles

  • Chocolate chips

Create sweet treats with the kids this holiday season with help from Walmart:

First, make your Rice Krispies base by combining butter, marshmallows and cereal in a saucepan, cooking on medium heat. Add the green food coloring — you’ll need more than you think — and keep stirring until you have a nice, evergreen color. Once combined, let everything cool for five minutes.

Then, add non-stick cooking spray to a pan and spread out your Rice Krispies mix, distributing it evenly across the pan. Add sprinkles, chocolate chips or any other “decorations” you want. Then, cut triangular tree shapes out of the mix, flipping sides each time to maximize the batter.

It’s that easy. A big advantage of this recipe, as Poppy pointed out, is that it doesn’t even require an oven. It’s quick, convenient and a great way to add some style to your holiday party. Plus, who doesn’t like Rice Krispies Treats?
