This Viral Hair-Curling Hack Requires a Blow-Dryer and an Empty Water Bottle

Best way to recycle ever?

Ever since the Dyson Airwrap dropped last month, it has monopolized virtually every hair-related conversation I've had. And why shouldn't it? It's one of the most innovative, advanced hair tools, like, ever. It features multiple attachments for various uses and, perhaps most notably, allows you to curl your hair with air and minimal heat instead of wrapping it around a scalding-hot piece of metal the way we've all submitted to doing for decades. Not everyone can afford the $550 multitasker, however, and even if you can, it's sold out and back-ordered at numerous retailers. Luckily, a clever viral hack means you don't have to wait to curl your hair with air.

The folks at the website Says spotted a video publicly posted to a Malaysian Facebook profile in which a woman appears to be using a hair dryer to blow around a piece of her long hair through a hole in the side of plastic water bottle. When she pulls the bottle off of her hair, an incredibly gorgeous curl is revealed, prompting the woman to laugh and smile. It's not known if the owner of the profile that posted the video is the one who shot it, but it's definitely finding its way around Facebook, getting more than a million views since it was posted earlier this week.

And now, more people are trying this trick, including South Florida stylist Olivia Smalley, who shared a video of her attempt with her nearly 140,000 Instagram followers. In the sped-up footage, she stuffs a section of her straight, blonde hair into an empty water bottle. She then inserts the concentrator on her Babyliss dryer into the hole she cut into the bottle, and you can see her hair spin behind the Nestle Pure Life logo. Smalley damn near faints when she sees how perfect the curl comes out, separating the strands to create a beautiful wavy effect.

Her video inspired others to post their attempts at what Smalley is calling the #blowthebottlechallenge. In the caption of her own video, North Carolina stylist Jezabel Lebatard wrote, "a few failed attempts getting the blow dryer placed just right but I was SHOOK at how well it worked 🙌🏽And to think about all the hard work I’ve put into my blow drying skills." Renèe Marie, another stylist based in North Carolina, provided tips in the caption of her video: "1. Make sure it's a longer bottle! 2. Make sure the bottle is a THICK you will see why in my video 😳 3. Let hair cool in the bottle before taking it out! 4. Hold blow drier at the right angle for the hair to spin around."

I would just like to point out that while many people are calling this trick a makeshift Dyson Airwrap, what it really resembles is one of my favorite as-seen-on-TV products from a few years ago, the Air Curler. In case it's not seared in your memory like it is in mine, the Air Curler was a big, pink, plastic cup with a rubber nozzle into which you insert your hair dryer. It would use what the manufacturer called "vortex technology" to whip your hair around in the cup, resulting in bouncy curls not unlike the ones the bottle hack creates.

Please enjoy the Air Curler commercial. I know I often do.

I don't blame you if the Airwrap is still on your holiday wishlist, but at least now you have a great way to recycle water bottles and get impressive curls in the meantime.
