Vin Diesel Says an All-Female ‘Fast & Furious’ Movie Is Definitely Happening
Vin Diesel might be busy doing press ahead of the release of F9: The Fast Saga later this year (not to mention making plans forFast 10, which is rumored to be a two-parter), but he already has his mind on creating another spinoff from the main movie timeline.
When asked what will be next for the franchise after the 10th movie, which is reported to be the final installment in the series, Diesel told MTV: "I've created a female spin-off. And that script comes next month, so we will see."
The first spinoff from the Fast Saga was Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbes & Shaw, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw. In addition to giving more screentime to these characters, Hobbs & Shaw also went in a slightly different creative direction to the central movies, veering into science fiction territory with the introduction of genetically engineered super-soldier Brixton Lore (Idris Elba).
And the women of the Fast Saga are already excited by the opportunity to do something similarly bold with this project. "I think it should be like a badass girl movie," said Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays hacker Ramsey. "It would be cool to have like a sort of Charlie’s Angels-type vibe with all the women. I think that’s kind of fun."
Michelle Rodriguez, who has played Letty Ortiz since the very first movie back in 2001, has her own ideas about how a women-centric adventure should play out. "Definitely all the power pieces would need to be in place," she said during the Road to Fast 9 press event. "See what Charlize is doing? We'd be like, 'Can we talk you into being a good girl?' She's so bad into this, right? She's so mean. I love her, though."
She's referring, of course, to Charlize Theron, who played cyberterrorist Cipher, an antagonist to the central cast, in 2017's The Fate of The Furious, a role she is reprising in the forthcoming F9.
Rodriguez makes a good point about "power pieces": while a pretty dude-heavy franchise, the Fast movies have built up a strong roster of recurring female characters over the last two decades. Jordana Brewster is a series mainstay as Mia Toretto, Gal Gadot appeared in the movies as Gisele Yashar prior to her star-making turn in Wonder Woman, while Hobbs & Shaw featured Vanessa Kirby and thespian legend Helen Mirren, who has a role in F9. And then there's rapper-turned-actress Cardi B, who is following her film debut Hustlers with an undisclosed part in F9.
The as-yet-untitled movie will be written by Nicole Perlman, whose writing credits include the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Lindsey Beer, who adapted the upcoming Chaos Walking YA franchise, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who worked on the Tomb Raider reboot and Captain Marvel.
