Vanderbilt safety Zaire Jones suspended after allegedly assaulting police officer with his car
A Vanderbilt football player has been suspended after he allegedly assaulted a police officer with his car last week, according to the Tennessean.
According to the report, sophomore safety Zaire Jones was pulled over by Vanderbilt University police officer Charles Harrison — who was off duty at the time — after attempting to drive around a traffic barricade blocking a closed road near campus.
When Harrison tried to figure out where he was going, Jones “refused to completely stop and struck Harrison on the left knee with the front left corner” of his car.
Jones then drove off and was later arrested. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and is due to appear in court on Sept. 21.
Vanderbilt announced on Tuesday that he has been suspended indefinitely, and that Jones has not practiced with the team since the arrest on Thursday.
The 20-year-old played in 11 games for Commodores last year, recording 11 tackles and one forced fumble. He was expected to earn a starting spot this season.
Vanderbilt opens its season on Saturday at home against Middle Tennessee State.
