"The Vampire Diaries" Stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley Apparently Didn't Get Along While Filming the Show

“I respected Paul Wesley. I didn’t like Paul Wesley.”

The Vampire Diaries finished its eight-season run in March of 2017, and fans have fond memories of the CW show about the magical, dramatic, sometimes creepy folks of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

One of the most beloved couples on the show was Stefan and Elena, played by Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley. The show centered around Elena’s relationships with the vampire Salvatore brothers, Stefan and his brother Damon. While #Stelena didn’t end up together in the end, their relationship was a major centerpiece of the show. However, Nina recently revealed that while she and Paul had amazing chemistry onscreen, enough to make their love story truly iconic, they didn’t get along at all offscreen.

Nina stopped by to chat with her former Vampire Diaries costars Kayla Ewell and Candice King and dropped the bombshell on an episode of their Directionally Challenged podcast. "Paul and I didn't get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn't like Paul Wesley," Nina said.

Wait a minute … whaaaaat? Nina acknowledged this news is shocking to fans, considering the intense chemistry between Stefan and Elena. "I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they'd be like, 'Are you and Paul dating in real life?'" she said. "Because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry." We watched the show, we totally know what they’re talking about.

The first few months of shooting may have been tough between the costars, but it all worked out in the end. “There’s a fine line between love and hate,” she explained. “And we despised each other so much, that it read as love. We really just didn't get along the first maybe five months of shooting." Things obviously got better and the two are now very close. In the episode, Nina acknowledged that working with someone day in and day out can be stressful. “When you work with anyone, or are spending a lot of time with anyone, little things are gonna annoy you about them,” she explained. “It's like a relationship, we were basically married without...we were together every day, we were kissing and doing all this stuff.”

Even though Vampire Diaries is over, Nina and Paul hang out “a lot” and are “really good friends,” as evidenced by their adorable social media reunions. #Stelena forever!
