The series finale of The Vampire Diaries has been surrounded by questions. First, would Nina Dobrev's return bring Elena Gilbert back to life? It turns out, she would. But how? After all, she's been in a coma since the end of season 6 — and the only way she can wake up is if Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham, dies.
Well, it turns out that the show's penultimate episode did feature Bonnie dying, sort of. In a new clip that surfaced online, the Salvatore brothers discuss what happened to Bonnie, right as they walk into their home and see Elena's coffin laying wide open — and very, very empty.
It's then that Stefan manages to fit the pieces of the puzzle together: "Earlier, Bonnie's heart stopped. She said she saw Elena," he says. Enter Elena, who is just as surprised to see Damon as he is to see her. (Because Stefan says that Bonnie talked about the experience, it's safe to say she survived the medical emergency. Phew!)
It's a pretty neat loophole to the whole Elena-can-only-wake-up-when-Bonnie-dies clause of her magical coma. So while fans were worried that Elena's return would be bittersweet — um, we don't think we could handle being excited to see her back while simultaneously mourning Bonnie — it seems those fears have been assuaged for now. Unfortunately, we'll still have to mourn the show in its entirety — but that's what Netflix binge-watches are for.
