Talk about lovesick: 21 students that attend Sandtown Middle School in Fulton County, Georgia were taken by emergency medical services to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta campuses at both Hughes Spalding and Egleston. They fell ill after eating Valentine’s Day candy and snacks, according to Mayor Bill Edwards, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Susan Romanick, a spokeswoman for Fulton County Schools, told AJC.com: “Our Fulton County School Police Department is investigating, and does not yet know what, if anything, is leading to students feeling ill.” A representative for Fulton County Schools did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment.

Linda Bryant, the Fulton school board president, told the outlet that the district’s area superintendent and other staff are currently at the two hospitals monitoring how the sick children are doing. While she could not comment on the severity of the illness, she did say it appeared that only children — no adults — fell ill.

Samples of the candy and snacks are being sent to a lab to determine what may have caused the illness, if anything. The Fulton County Schools Police Chief told WSB-TV that they are currently trying to determine if there was an intent to harm the students.
