Warning: This Is Us season 5 spoilers for the episode "Brotherly Love" ahead.

Last night's This Is Us episode was so important for many different reasons.

On one level, you had Kevin (Justin Hartley) flying out to Philadelphia to talk to his brother Randall (Sterling K. Brown) for a much-needed sit down about the awful things they said to each other in the season 4 finale. But their conversation evolved into something much deeper and more profound – it became a moment where they shared honest and sometimes "ugly" feelings and reflected on how the issues of race and adoption shaped their dynamic and individual perspectives on each other and their childhood.

At the end of this messy-but-necessary discussion, it seemed as though Randall and Kevin started to come to an understanding. But in the last few minutes, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall's daughters came home and unintentionally interrupted their heart-to-heart. Does this mean there's more to talk about?

According to what Kay Oyegun, a This Is Us co-executive producer who directed the episode, the audience can take a "big ol' sigh of relief" knowing that Kevin and Randall broke ground and are now on a much better path.

"So, as far as the support and the love — as best men, as brothers and all of those things — I think people can look forward to a lot of that," she told Entertainment Weekly, while also saying that the two can now "forge a beginning of a new dynamic."

That said, it sounds like there will be more important discussions to come in the episodes ahead. After all, Randall and his sister Kate (Chrissy Metz) also started a conversation about race and their childhood that never got fully resolved. On top of that, there's still the issue of Rebecca (Mandy Moore)'s declining health at hand and differing opinions on how to help her.

"I'll say that we're very, very fortunate to have a season 6 where plenty of conversations are going to take place," Kay continued. "This particular season has arced out; the finale is arced out in a way that I think is very satisfying from where these conversations started. And what's lovely is that this family's makeup is not changing, so there are more conversations to be had. But I think probably in ways that might be really surprising for folks."

Just as a reminder, the season 5 finale is approaching quickly. The next new episode is set to air May 11 and, as announced on the latest episode promo, there are only three episodes left of season 5. After that, season 6 is set to be the final chapter of the NBC drama. We can only hope that by the end of it all, Kevin and Randall will be stronger than ever.
