A 'This Is Us' Writer Just Addressed Those Theories About the Person in the White Car

From Country Living

  • This Is Us season 5 continued Tuesday night with a new episode entitled "The Ride."

  • The writers left fans wondering who is in the white car that pulls up at the end of the episode.

  • Co-executive producer and writer Julia Brownell addressed fans' big question in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Another week, another heart-tugging episode of This Is Us.

Tuesday night, the NBC drama's writers showed how four sets of Pearson parents — Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia); Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) — experienced their first drive home with their newborns. While the episode had its light-hearted moments, fans were undoubtedly teary-eyed by the end thanks to Randall's heartfelt speech about his family tree's "branches" and seeing Deja (La Trice Harper) and Annie (Iyana Halley) all grown up in the show's famous flash-forward sequence.

In addition to the waterworks, fans were given yet another mystery (reminiscent of the "who is 'her'?" debacle from the past) in the last few minutes of the episode. As future Randall embraces his three daughters and begins walking into Kevin's home, a white car honks and pulls into the driveway.

"Hey, look who's here," Randall says as he and Deja wave to the unidentified driver. Seconds later, the episode ends, leaving fans desperate to figure out who the driver could be.

Thankfully, co-executive producer Julia Brownell, who wrote the latest season 5 episode, dropped a serious hint while speaking to Entertainment Weekly:

"I will say I think you'll get a little bit more information, at least by the end of the season of who might be in that car. And I think it potentially might be more than one person."

Meanwhile, Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel in the series and directed the episode, joked in the same interview: "Um, I mean, all I can say is that Miguel loves white cars. White cars and gadgets. No, I'm just kidding." Hmm, suspicious indeed ...

Of course, the internet has already come up with several suspects considering who we have and have not seen in the ever-cryptic flash-forward sequence. Possible names include Kate and Toby's kids Jack (Blake Stadnik) and Hailey (Adelaide Kane), Kate, or Madison. After last night's episode, it could also be Ellie (Annie Funke), who could wind up changing her mind about the adoption arrangement.

At this point, it could be all of them or a combination of the above names ... or perhaps someone we haven't even met yet. But so far, here's what we know about the 2034 flash-forward scene:

  • Kevin completes Jack's dream home and lives there with his twins.

  • An ailing Rebecca is "her" and is being taken care of in Kevin's house.

  • Nicky (Griffin Dunne) is by Rebecca's bedside.

  • Miguel and Kate have not appeared (yet).

  • Kevin was supposed to be in charge of ordering food for the whole family.

  • Randall and Beth are still together and happily married.

  • Deja is pregnant and is working as a medical intern.

  • Tess (Iantha Richardson) is a social worker.

  • Toby shows up without a wedding ring.

Don't know about you, but we're going to be playing detective all week until the next episode airs.
