Season 5 of This Is Us has left fans with mixed emotions and not just because of the storylines. Now, sadly, we’ll have to say goodbye to the Pearsons sooner than expected.

On April 13, minutes after the latest episode aired on the East coast, a trailer for the next episode of This Is Us was shared on YouTube. The 17-second clip announced that the NBC drama would be returning in mid-May for “the final 3 episodes of the season.” Given that we're up to the 13th episode, this means season 5 will only have a total of 16 episodes instead of the 18 originally ordered.

On social media, many fans watched the promo video and weren’t thrilled about the shortened season. “3 episodes left??????????? I’m glad to see more of Beth any day but 3 episodes of the season left 👎🏽,” one person wrote. “I cannot believe that we are getting two less episodes this season! Nooooo we need the full 18 episodes,” another added.

But why is This Is Us season 5 ending so soon?

As fans know, season 5 of This Is Us has followed an on-again, off-again schedule since first premiering in October of 2020. From the start, show creator Dan Fogelman has been open about the coronavirus pandemic impacting production in L.A. and causing the series to go on a handful of breaks. According to The Wrap, COVID-19 is also the reason why This Is Us season 5 is concluding after 16 episodes. The move was made “to try to help curb the spread.”

But the episode count isn’t the only change happening. The season 5 finale of This Is Us will air on Monday, May 25, 2021 at 10 p.m. ET. That’s right, the last episode of season 5 will be shown on NBC in a different time slot, an hour later than the show’s usual 9 p.m. ET.

Make sure to mark your calendars now so you don’t miss what we’re anticipating to be another emotional ending.
