New Urban HS promgoers have Goodwill to thank

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (KOIN) — For the second straight year, some students from New Urban High School in Milwaukie went to prom without worrying the costs the come with it. Last year, a student reached out to Goodwill to see if they’d donate some gift cards so kids could buy dresses and suits.

But Hayley Platt at the Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette took it one step further — and did it again.

Platt is helping students from New Urban High to find everything they need to look good for prom, all courtesy of Goodwill.

“New Urban wanted to come back, and I wanted them to come back. They’re such a great group of kids,” Platt told KOIN 6 News. “I just really want them to be decked out and feel great for prom, so we’re doing this event and they get free rein of the store. And I help them feel like a million bucks when they leave.”

Student Kylee Mahoney said, “It’s very helpful because not a lot of people have money to go buy dresses and suits.”

“I found a really stylish vest that can be tailored easily and I also found a really nice jacket,” student Isaac Brady Martin said.

New Urban teacher Kat Snyder said Goodwill’s gesture is really sweet.

“It’s very kind of them. They did it for us last year, as well and it made students able to come to the prom and feel pretty and handsome,” Snyder said. “And they weren’t going to come before, so now that they have the attire they feel like, ‘Yes, I can go.'”

And the proof is in the pictures — all glammed up at their prom.
