Ujoh RTW Fall 2021
Designer Mitsuru Nishizaki felt that the best way to coax people back outside was to offer them an uplifting wardrobe. For fall, he translated this into lightweight layers that combined sporty pieces, soft textures and tailored elements for a comfortable yet smart coed look. A plaid motif and a brushstroke print by abstract painter Kanako Sasaki was inspired by a summer outing to Naoshima Island, a hotspot for art in Japan, and kept the lineup from looking too austere.
The look: Quasi-monastic gender-free separates that can be layered to fit the mood and formality of any occasion, with a dash of sportswear and an airy palette of light winter tones and darker hues.

Quote of note: “After [the past year], people must have the desire to touch, feel and experience the beauty,” said Mitsuru Nishizaki through a translator. “I wanted to show things that would stimulate people and ease them back into normal life.”
Standout pieces: A three-piece combination of a cropped spencer jacket; a slip dress and wide-leg trousers; another trio featuring a jacket with split sleeves, and matching double-layered bottoms, and a blanket cape-coat paired with a print shirtdress.
Takeaway: If the laid-back note that Nishizaki intended sometimes felt forced, this was nonetheless a handsome lineup that made good on his long-standing pattern-making and tailoring experience.
