UCF's Aaron Robinson taken off on a stretcher after opening kickoff of Knights' season

University of Central Florida cornerback Aaron Robinson was taken off the field on a stretcher following the opening kickoff of UCF’s game against UConn.

Robinson was covering the kickoff as UCF kicked to UConn. Robinson went in to make a tackle on the returner’s left and his head made contact at an awkward angle with the Keyion Dixon’s body.

Robinson’s neck was immobilized as he was taken off the field. Robinson gave the fans a thumbs up as he was carted off the field and he was seen moving his legs as trainers tended to him.

The game was delayed for nine minutes as Robinson received medical attention. This post will be updated with further information on Robinson’s condition.

The NCAA changed kickoff rules before the 2018 season in an attempt to make kickoffs, typically the most dangerous plays, safer. Teams can call for a fair catch anywhere inside the 25-yard-line and get the ball at the 25. The change was made to have fewer kickoff returns during a game.

The NFL has also made changes to kickoffs. Players on the kicking team are no longer allowed to get a running start before the kicker kicks the ball.
