U-Haul Data Reveals That More People Moved to Tennessee and Texas Than Any Other States Last Year
Wondering where everyone relocated to in 2020? Last year, more people moved to Tennessee than any other state, according to U-Haul.
To create its 2020 migrations trends report, U-Haul calculated growth states based on the net gain of U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving a state last year. The data is complied from more than two million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions.
Even before the pandemic, the Volunteer State saw a growth of self-movers. Overall, the Tennessee cities where the most people moved were: Knoxville, the Tri-Cities (the region of Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol), Cookeville, Clarksville, Cleveland, Murfreesboro, and Maryville.
Texas and Florida, which were the top two destinations from 2016 to 2019, remained at the top of the list. In 2020, Texas was second in growth, and Florida was third.
At the bottom of the list? California came in last by a wide margin, with the highest net loss of U-haul trucks.
"I’m seeing a lot of people from California move (to Tennessee) because they’re attracted to our lifestyle," Jeff Porter, U-Haul Company of Nashville president, said in a news release. "Tennessee has no income tax and is very business-friendly. There are plenty of jobs. People and companies are taking note. Places like Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Clarksville are attracting tons of new residents. Nashville is ever-growing, and even the era of COVID-19 isn’t slowing that."
