CBP found four tons of weed in a shipment of jalapeños.
CBP officers at the Otay Mesa cargo facility in San Diego found the cannabis stored in 314 packages aboard a tractor trailer loaded with jalapeño peppers. Border Patrol said the shipment weighed more than 7,500 pounds.
“I am proud of the officers for seizing this significant marijuana load,” Otay Mesa Port Director Rosa Hernandez stated. “Not only did they prevent drugs from reaching our community, they also prevented millions of dollars of potential profit from making into the hands of a transnational criminal organization.”
The truck came through the checkpoint on August 15, 2019. Authorities said they moved the truck into a secondary checkpoint where a K9 team alerted them to the shipment of peppers. CBP officers then checked the shipment and found a “leafy green substance,” which tested positive for THC.
This seizure comes less than a week after the same cargo facility seized 10,642 pounds of cannabis shipped in plastic auto parts on August 13, 2019.
