Twitter User Shares a Photo of Her Ripped Jean Sunburn

It's almost summertime, and that means it's time to break out the SPF. And just a heads-up: Wearing something like ripped jeans will not ward off the damage that the sun can do if you expose your skin to UV rays for too long. You might religiously apply sunscreen to your face, neck, and even ears or hands if you're super diligent, but people have been taking to social media to post painful-looking reminders that any exposed skin can be burned.

"Do not go sit in the sun for [more than two] hours wearing ripped jeans...I learned my lesson today," one Twitter user wrote, posting a picture of red stripes on her legs. "Never wearing ripped jeans in the sun again," another said alongside a picture of some very red kneecaps. Obviously, it's easy to forget to apply sunscreen to the small patches of skin that stick out when the rest of your legs are covered, but these photos are a rough reminder that you should cover yourself head to toe in the stuff, no matter what.

If you do end up with a nasty sunburn, the best thing to do is cool off the skin with an ice cube or cold shower, pop an ibuprofen, and hydrate by drinking water and moisturizing multiple times a day. You can also take preventative steps by applying sunscreen in the weeks leading up to a big vacation or outdoor trip.

And now that you've been warned about ripped jean–shaped tan lines, here are some other spots that you might be missing with your sunscreen application: around the nostrils, above your lip, next to your armpits, and on the tops of your toes. See the below pictures for even more reason not to miss your legs.
