Twitter had LOTS of feelings about the different Rick timelines in the “Walking Dead” premiere
In the Season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead — and warning, because some spoilers follow! — Rick appeared in what seemed to be three different time periods.
There’s present-day Rick, going to war with Negan. Then there’s future Rick, who appears *much* older with a cane and a significantly grayer beard and hair. And lastly, there’s Rick with bloodshot eyes, but it’s not exactly clear where he fits into the timeline.
So the time periods in The Walking Dead‘s “Mercy” were, needless to say, a little confusing.
But also, are these even “time periods,” or could these be dream or fantasy sequences, or hallucinations? Could some of this be real, and other parts be imagined? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg.
Naturally, Twitter lit up and expressed its confusion about the “time jump” — and tried to process what the hell was going on.

I’m just as confused as you are why “Another One Rides the Bus” was featured in #TheWalkingDead season premiere, but I’m extremely honored! pic.twitter.com/CzCqcQOiie

I thought old man Rick was my TV accidentally switching to The Santa Clause movie with Tim Allen. #TheWalkingDead pic.twitter.com/CGVmTiApwA

Not to mention, it had QUESTIONS.
Most devastatingly, could Rick be turning???
I have no idea what's going on... Why was Rick just 60 years old? #TWD #TheWalkingDead

So question, why in these flash scenes is Rick an old man and Michone is still a total babe? #TheWalkingDead

And of course Twitter had its own observations and theories!
Some crazier than others.
OLD MAN RICK. Hallucination... or flash forward?!

The old Rick can't come to the phone right now.
Why?
Oh cause he's dead— Spooky Miriya.

Since this is just the start of the season, we have *plenty* of time to work through these different time periods, fantasies, or whatever else they could be. And of course, there are the comics to help us through this difficult and confusing time.
The Walking Dead airs on Sundays on AMC.
