A Twitter Debate's Brewing Over Demi Lovato's Hair

When Demi Lovato released her latest music video, "No Promises" with the group Cheat Codes, Twitter reacted - and not just to her vocals. They went in about another detail in the video: her hair, which had some Twitter users calling her out for cultural appropriation because they thought she was wearing dreadlocks.

It isn't the first time the singer's landed in hot water for her hair: She wore dreadlocks back in 2014.

The hair style has a long cultural history, including in the Rastafarian society of Jamaica, where it carries strong religious ties to that community. While it's up for debate whether or not it's wrong for non-black people to wear hairstyles with such strong historical implications, many Twitter users take issue with styles like dreadlocks becoming "trends." Celebrities sometimes wear hairstyles that are deeply rooted in other cultures, with no credit given to where the look originated.

Some Twitter users jumped to Demi's defense, saying her hair wasn't actually dreaded but twisted.

You can be the judge, but one thing's for sure: It's another heated debate.

Update 5/23, 12:00 a.m. EST: Lovato tweeted that the hairstyle she's wearing in the "No Promises" video isn't dreadlocks after all, but instead twists.

She then dedicated her upcoming music to her "haters":
