As someone with long hair, I’ve always had problems with strands clogging the drain while I showered. I’ve tried all types of hair catchers, wasted time and money with plumbers, and regrettably used Drano during desperate times. The genius of the TubShroom lies in its brilliant design. Due to its cylindrical “mushroom” shape, you don’t actually see any of the hair, soap or residue buildup until you’re actually ready to clean it. The product is made of silicone — making it flexible and easy to fit in a variety of tub drains (TubShroom recommends drains 1.5-inch to 1.75-inch inches wide. The TubShroom is also covered in holes to allow water to easily pass through, and any hair (human or pet) that is caught is wrapped around the tube in one central place to easily wipe off and clean.
In order to keep your TubShroom lasting long, you do need to be diligent about cleaning the hair out. Every day is not necessary, but every few days is best practice to keep your TubShroom in the best shape possible. I also suggest cleaning it out when it’s dry not immediately after showering when it’s still wet (it’s quicker and lessens the ick factor too). If you want to go above and beyond, I recommend rinsing the TubShroom out with water when you remove the hair because with all the dirt and scum that passes through, it causes the TubShroom’s exterior to become extra sticky and might clog the TubShroom’s “pores” over time.
Since my first TubShroom purchase in 2017, I’ve replaced it only once in 2018. This wasn’t because it didn’t work anymore, but it just wasn’t as crisp white as it used to be. But according to TubShroom, you won’t need to replace it for at least 10 years.
