At first, I thought it was a mean spoof Stephen Colbert slapped together to ridicule President Trump’s love-buddy meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Then, with a sick feeling in my stomach, I discovered it was real: Trump had an over-the-top, staggeringly corny and melodramatic four-minute video made to show to Kim. It’s a sort of trailer for a feature film yet to be made, in which Trump and Kim are action heroes — a shameless attempt to kiss up to the dictator.
A deep-voiced narrator sets the scene: “What if a people that share a common and rich heritage can find a common future?” (What common heritage do America and North Korea share? Don’t ask.) “Their story is well-known, but what will be their sequel?” (Trump loves the familiar, so he digs sequels.) A phony logo comes onscreen as the narrator says, “Destiny Pictures presents a story of opportunity, a new story, a new beginning. … Two men, two leaders, one destiny.” Is this movie called Destiny? From Destiny Pictures? That would be like Paramount Pictures putting out a movie called Paramount.
Filled with sunrises and scenes of happy people eating great food and making nonstop scientific breakthroughs, what I’ll call The Destiny Picture has two big stars. The narrator intones, “Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un in a meeting to remake history, to shine in the sun.” Can you imagine what the dictator must have thought when Trump pulled out his iPad and showed him this bit of schlock? There is no limit to which Trump can embarrass himself, and us. During a press conference held after the summit, Trump said, “I think he loved it.” Meanwhile, Kim offered his own take on their meeting, saying through a translator that some might think it’s “a scene from a science-fiction movie.” He was probably thinking of Solo.
