President Trump defended Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh against a new report of sexual misconduct and accused the media of trying to “scare him into turning Liberal.”
“Now the Radical Left Democrats and their Partner, the LameStream Media, are after Brett Kavanaugh again, talking loudly of their favorite word, impeachment,” Trump wrote. “He is an innocent man who has been treated HORRIBLY. Such lies about him. They want to scare him into turning Liberal!”
Trump advised via Twitter that “Brett Kavanaugh should start suing people for libel, or the Justice Department should come to his rescue.”
“The lies being told about him are unbelievable,” Trump wrote. “False Accusations without recrimination. When does it stop? They are trying to influence his opinions. Can’t let that happen!”
Trump's tweets came after a New York Times article reported that Kavanaugh, whose confirmation to the Supreme Court incited fears that Roe v. Wade would be repealed, had allegedly exposed himself while inebriated to Deborah Ramirez when the two were in their freshman year at Yale University.
Kavanaugh, according to the Times, “pulled down his pants and thrust his penis at her, prompting her to swat it away and inadvertently touch it.”
Last October, the Senate voted narrowly to confirm Kavanaugh to the nation’s highest court, ending a bitterly divisive nomination fight that included allegations of misbehavior from multiple women, which he denied. During his confirmation hearing, one accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, testified that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a party when they were teenagers.
After Ford’s public accusation, an account of the alleged incident involving Ramirez first emerged last September during Kavanaugh’s hearings. The allegations were dismissed by his supporters as uncorroborated, and although it was reported to the FBI during the confirmation process last year it was never investigated, according to the Times. Ramirez did not testify in the confirmation hearings, and Kavanaugh has denied both her and Ford’s accusations.
“At least seven people, including Ms. Ramirez’s mother, heard about the Yale incident long before Mr. Kavanaugh was a federal judge,” the Times reported.
When asked last fall about Ramirez's allegations, Kavanaugh in a Fox News interview, said, “I never did any such thing — never did any such thing. The other people alleged to be there don’t recall any such thing. If such a thing had happened, it would’ve been the talk of campus.”
But former classmates corroborated that the incident occurred. One, Max Stier, told the Times said he saw Kavanaugh, “with his pants down at a different drunken dorm party, where friends pushed his penis into the hand of a female student.”
“Mr. Stier, who runs a nonprofit organization in Washington, notified senators and the F.B.I. about this account, but the F.B.I. did not investigate and Mr. Stier has declined to discuss it publicly,” the Times reported.
Ramirez’s legal team provided the FBI with “a list of at least 25 individuals who may have had corroborating evidence,” the Times wrote. “But the bureau — in its supplemental background investigation — interviewed none of them, though we learned many of these potential witnesses tried in vain to reach the F.B.I. on their own.”
Amid the new sexual misconduct claim, Democratic presidential hopefuls Julián Castro, Senator Kamala Harris, and Senator Elizabeth Warren have called for an investigation into Kavanaugh and impeachment.
“It’s more clear than ever that Brett Kavanaugh lied under oath. He should be impeached,” Castro tweeted Saturday. “And Congress should review the failure of the Department of Justice to properly investigate the matter.”
“I sat through those hearings. Brett Kavanaugh lied to the U.S. Senate and most importantly to the American people. He was put on the Court through a sham process, and his place on the Court is an insult to the pursuit of truth and justice,” Harris, who fiercely contested Kavanaugh’s nomination, tweeted Sunday. “He must be impeached.”
Warren echoed Harris’s sentiment, saying, “Confirmation is not exoneration, and these newest revelations are disturbing. Like the man who appointed him, Kavanaugh should be impeached.”
Trump later tweeted, “Can’t let Brett Kavanaugh give Radical Left Democrat (Liberal Plus) Opinions based on threats of Impeaching him over made up stories (sound familiar?), false allegations, and lies. This is the game they play. Fake and Corrupt News is working overtime! #ProtectKavanaugh”
