Trump's Notes: "I Hear You"
Yesterday, while Parkland shooting survivors and students across the country called for gun control, President Trump talked to a group of young people and families affected by the country's deadliest tragedies caused by gun violence. In a listening session at the White House State Dining Room, mass-shooting survivors shared their emotional stories and experiences with the president, pleading for change.
Trump appeared to have a set of notes handy for the event, captured by Getty Images photographer Chip Somodevilla, according to CNN.
Another photo from AP showed a clearer view:
The list included points like, "1) What would you most want me to know about your experience?" "2) What can we do to help you feel safe?" and, "4) Resources? Ideas?" But the fifth prompt raised eyebrows: "5) I hear you."
Trump apparently didn't say the words "I hear you" in the listening session, according to Bloomberg reporter Jennifer Jacobs. Instead he said phrases like, "I just grieve for you" and promised to "come up with a solution." CNN also reports that the president didn't appear to use the notes during the listening session.
Nevertheless, it didn't take long for the internet to respond as soon as the photos surfaced online.
Some saw the "I hear you" prompt as a representation of Trump's lack of empathy, while the country mourns the 17 lives lost in last week's school shooting in Florida, and countless other before that.
